Changelog
New tools, rebuilt engines and other changes to Convertur, newest first. See the methodology for how tools are built and checked.
- New tools: MP3 to OGG, WebP to GIF, image color picker, XML formatter, TIFF to PDF, MP4 to MOV and MPEG to MP4.
- WebP to GIF keeps animated WebP files animated, with their frame timing and loop count, in browsers that support WebCodecs image decoding.
- TIFF to PDF puts every page of a multi-page TIFF on its own PDF page, sized from the scan's resolution. A PDF made from a single image is now named after that file.
- Tool counts across the site now count each tool once. Pages that are presets of another tool, such as MP4 to MP3 for Video to MP3, no longer add to the total.
- New tools: video to MP3, MOV to MP3, MP4 to WAV, M4A to WAV, PNG to PDF, HEIC to PDF, JFIF to JPG and Base64 decode.
- JPG to PDF now places JPG photos in the PDF without re-compressing them, so the PDF is about the size of the photos and keeps their exact quality. It also accepts iPhone HEIC photos.
- JFIF to JPG keeps the original JPEG data and only changes the extension, so there is no quality loss.
- Fixed awkward “How to” headings on tool pages whose names are not instructions, such as the JavaScript minifier.
- Added a methodology page that explains how the tools are built and checked, this changelog, and a disclaimer.
- Added hub pages for data files, documents and subtitles, and archives and fonts.
- Tool pages now show when their copy was last updated and link to a pre-filled form for reporting an error.
- Blog posts are now credited to Convertur instead of individual bylines.
- New tools: image to ASCII art, image to pixel art, STL viewer and STL to OBJ.
- New glossary entries for dithering and STL files.
- Every indexed page now has its own preview image when it is shared.
- Every tool now has its own illustrated icon.
- New or rebuilt tools: extract RAR and 7z archives, CSV to Excel, Excel to CSV and JSON, Word to PDF, RAF, ORF, RW2 and PEF to JPG, TTF to WOFF2, WOFF2 and WOFF to TTF, a favicon generator, and PNG and JPG to SVG.
- PNG to AVIF now encodes a real AVIF file, because no browser canvas can save AVIF.
- Large engines for background removal, HEIC, 7-Zip, Excel and AVIF now load on demand from pinned versions, so the site itself downloads much less code.
- JPEG output keeps the original EXIF data when Keep EXIF is on.
- Added three guides and five glossary terms.
- Rewrote copy across the site and removed claims the converters do not support. Thin or duplicate tool pages were removed, and their old addresses redirect to the closest tool or are marked as removed.
- Site analytics now record only explicit actions in a tool, never the files or text you process.
- Added category hub pages for images, PDFs, audio, video and developer tools.
- Tool pages now link to the guides, glossary terms and blog posts that cover them.
- Expanded tool pages with more detailed explanations and steps for each operating system.
- Corrected publish and update dates on blog posts and guides.
- Fixed the PDF to CBZ converter.
- Added the media metadata editor and the screen, webcam and audio recorder.
- Some audio and video conversions now use the browser's built-in media encoders when it supports the format.
- Added tool search with a keyboard command menu.
- Added the SQLite viewer, HAR viewer, PDF compare and searchable OCR PDF tools.
- Added the universal converter, which suggests a tool for any mix of files.
- Running conversions can now be cancelled, and tools remember your settings.
- Expanded the glossary entries.
- Convertur launched with in-browser converters for images, PDFs, audio, video, data files, documents, developer text, archives and fonts, plus local AI tools and the blog.
