What is a ZIP file?

ZIP is the most common archive format. One .zip file holds many files and folders, usually with lossless compression. Downloads, email attachments and folder exports from cloud drives often arrive as a ZIP. To unzip it is to turn that one file back into the originals. People also call this extracting or decompressing.

Unzip online without installing anything

Every desktop system can open a ZIP. But you are not always on your own device. It might be a locked work laptop, a shared computer or a phone where you need one file from a big archive. Many online unzip tools send the archive to a server first. This one opens it in your browser tab, so contracts, source code and design files never reach a server.

How to decompress a zip file online

The page reads the ZIP's file list in your browser and decompresses each entry with DEFLATE. You see every file with its path and size. Each file has its own download button. Download all as ZIP packs every extracted file into a new archive named after the original. If you only need one file, download just that one.

What this unzipper can open

It opens standard ZIP entries that are stored or DEFLATE compressed. That covers archives made by Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and most apps. Files inside folders show their full path, such as reports/2024/summary.pdf. Empty folders are skipped because they hold no files. It can't open password-protected archives or entries packed with Deflate64, bzip2 or LZMA. You can open one archive at a time. For RAR and 7z archives, use the RAR and 7z extractors, which run 7-Zip in your browser and can also open ZIPs this page can't.

Can I unzip a folder online?

Yes. A zipped folder is a normal ZIP file. Drop it here and every file inside is listed with its folder path. Press Download all as ZIP to keep the same folders, or download single files one by one.

How to unzip files on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

Your device's built-in tools can also unzip a file. Here is where to find them:

Windows 10 and 11: right-click the .zip in File Explorer, choose Extract All, pick a folder and press Extract. You can also double-click the ZIP to browse it and drag files out.
Mac: double-click the .zip in Finder. Archive Utility extracts it into a folder next to the original.
iPhone and iPad: open the Files app and tap the .zip. The files go into a new folder in the same place.
Android: in Files by Google, tap the .zip and choose Extract. Other file managers have a similar option.
Any other device, including shared or locked computers: drop the ZIP on this page and download what you need.

When a ZIP file won't open

If the tool says the file is not a valid archive, the download is often incomplete. Download it again and compare the file size. The file may also be another format renamed to .zip. Or it may be one part of a split archive, like .z01, .z02 and .zip, which needs every part. This tool can't join split parts. The whole archive is held in memory while it is unpacked, so a ZIP of several gigabytes may fail on a phone even if it opens on a computer.
