What is a 7z file?

7z is the archive format of 7-Zip, a free and open-source archiver. It usually compresses with LZMA or LZMA2, which often gives smaller files than ZIP or RAR, especially for large sets of similar files such as software, game assets and backups. Windows 11 can open 7z in recent versions of File Explorer, but older Windows, macOS, iPhones and Chromebooks need an extra app.
