What is a RAR file?

RAR is an archive format made by WinRAR. Like ZIP, one .rar file holds many files and folders, compressed to save space. RAR often compresses better than ZIP and was long the standard for downloads, game mods, comic collections and split uploads. Windows 11 can now open RAR in File Explorer, but older Windows versions, Chromebooks, iPhones and many Android phones still need an extra app.

How to open a RAR file online

RAR5, RAR4 and passwords

Both the current RAR5 format from WinRAR 5 and later and the older RAR4 format open here. If the archive is protected with a password, a password box appears. Type the password and press Extract with password. Archives that also hide their file names are supported the same way. A wrong password gives a clear message, and the password never leaves your browser.

Limits

Multi-part archives, such as .part1.rar, .part2.rar or the old .r00 and .r01 style, need every part, and this page opens one file at a time, so they don't work here. Join them with WinRAR or 7-Zip on a desktop. The extracted files are held in memory, so very large archives may fail on a phone even when they open on a computer. If any file in the archive is damaged, nothing is extracted, so you never save a corrupted copy by mistake.

How to open RAR files on Windows, Mac and phones

Windows 11: recent updates let File Explorer open .rar files. Right-click and choose Extract All.
Windows 10: install 7-Zip or WinRAR, then right-click the file and extract it.
Mac: The Unarchiver from the App Store opens RAR, or use Keka.
iPhone and Android: file manager apps such as iZip, RAR for Android or ZArchiver open RAR.
Any device with a browser: drop the file on this page.
