What is a HAR file?

HAR, HTTP Archive, is a JSON file that records every request a browser made while a page loaded: URLs, methods, status codes, timings, headers and often the full request and response bodies. Support teams ask for HAR files to debug login problems, slow pages and failed API calls. You save one from the Network panel of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari developer tools.

How to view a HAR file

Drop the .har file above. The viewer shows the number of requests, how many failed with a status of 400 or higher, and the total bytes transferred, followed by a table of each request with its method, URL, status, time and size. Export the table as CSV to sort and filter it in a spreadsheet.

Sanitize a HAR before you share it

A HAR file can contain your session cookies and access tokens, which would let the reader act as you. Sanitize writes a copy with all cookies removed, the Authorization, Proxy-Authorization, Cookie, Set-Cookie and X-API-Key headers removed, request bodies replaced with a placeholder and response bodies dropped. URLs are kept as they are, so check query strings for tokens before you send the file.

A valid file can still hold the wrong data. Before you import the result, check the row count, field names, text encoding, dates, IDs and a few unusual rows.
