How to extract subtitles from a video

Drop an MKV, MP4, MOV or WebM file above and press Convert. FFmpeg reads the first subtitle track in the file and converts it to SRT, the subtitle format nearly every player, editor and subtitle site accepts. Download the .srt file, named after the video.

Which subtitles can be extracted

Text subtitles work: SRT, ASS and SSA in MKV files, WebVTT, and mov_text in MP4 and MOV. Styling from ASS tracks is dropped, since SRT holds plain text. Picture-based subtitles, such as PGS from Blu-ray rips and VobSub from DVDs, are images of text and can't be turned into SRT without OCR, so those files return an error.

What to do with the SRT

Edit the text or fix the timing in the subtitle editor, translate it, convert it to VTT for a web player, or keep it next to an MP4 copy of the video so players can load it. Most players show a subtitle file automatically when it has the same name as the video.
