How to edit subtitles online

Drop an .srt, .vtt or .ass file above. Every cue appears as a row with its start time, end time and text. Click into a time or the text to change it, or delete a cue you don't need. When you are done, export the result as SRT, VTT or ASS. The editor checks that every cue has text and ends after it starts before it lets you save.

Fix subtitles that are out of sync

If every line appears too early or too late by the same amount, enter the offset in seconds and press Shift. Negative numbers move subtitles earlier. A cue that would end before zero is dropped, and one that would start before zero starts at zero. If the drift grows over the film, the subtitles were timed for a different frame rate. Enter the source and target rates, such as 23.976 and 25, and press Rescale FPS to stretch every timestamp to match.

Preview on your video

Choose a video from your device and it plays in the editor with the current cues drawn over it, so you can check timing before exporting. The video is opened locally and is not uploaded. From there you can also burn the edited subtitles into a new MP4, which makes them permanent and visible in every player.

Clean up long or choppy cues

Merge adjacent joins cues that follow each other within 0.2 seconds when the combined text stays under 160 characters. Split long cues breaks any cue over 84 characters at the space nearest its middle and divides the time in proportion to the text. Both are quick fixes for auto-generated captions.

Your file stays on this device

Convertur reads the file in this browser tab and builds the result there. The file is never sent to a server. Larger browser engines load only when this tool needs them.

Before you start

Input: SRT, VTT, and ASS. Output: edited subtitles or subtitled video. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.

A document conversion may not keep every font, layout rule, embedded object, subtitle cue or app-specific feature. Read through the full result before you send or submit it.

Keep the original until you have opened and checked the result. The work happens in this browser tab, so the size you can handle depends on your device's memory, your browser and the file itself.
