Why convert GIF to MP4?

GIF has no real motion compression and only 256 colors per frame, so animations soon grow to many megabytes. H.264 video mostly stores what changes between frames. The same animation as an MP4 is usually a fraction of the size and plays more smoothly. Many social platforms and chat apps turn uploaded GIFs into video for this reason. Some upload forms accept only video files.

How to convert GIF to MP4

Drop one or more GIFs above and press Convert all. The GIF frames are re-encoded to H.264 at CRF 23 with the yuv420p pixel format, which nearly every player supports. That pixel format needs even dimensions. A GIF with an odd width or height loses one pixel on that side. The MP4 has no audio track, because GIFs have no sound.

Make the MP4 loop like a GIF

An MP4 doesn't loop on its own the way a GIF does. Looping is a playback setting, so turn it on wherever the video is shown. You can also build the repeats into the file itself.

On a web page, use a video element with the autoplay, loop, muted and playsinline attributes. Most browsers only autoplay video that is muted.
In PowerPoint, select the video, open Playback and tick Loop until Stopped.
For a file that repeats in any player, run the MP4 through Loop Video and choose 2 to 20 plays.

What converting can't fix

The MP4 keeps the look of the GIF, including its limited colors and any dithering. Converting can't bring back color or detail the GIF never had. If you still have the video the GIF came from, use that instead for a sharper result.

Video work uses a lot of memory and CPU. Try a short clip first and check that the sound and playback work. On a phone, split large batches into smaller ones.
