EXIF metadata is data about the photo stored alongside the pixels: the capture time, camera and lens, exposure settings, and often precise GPS coordinates.
It’s valuable for organising your own library but can reveal more than you intend when shared — strip it before posting publicly.
What EXIF can reveal
Common EXIF fields include capture date and time, camera and lens model, exposure, aperture, focal length, ISO, orientation, editing software, and a preview thumbnail. Phones and cameras may also record latitude, longitude, altitude, and the direction the camera faced.
Metadata is separate from the visible pixels, so cropping or blurring part of an image does not necessarily remove it. Social networks often strip metadata during upload, but email, cloud storage, file-sharing links, and direct downloads may preserve the original fields.
When to keep or remove EXIF
Keep EXIF in a private photo library when you use capture dates, locations, or camera settings to organise and search. Photographers also rely on exposure details to understand how an image was made and to diagnose technical problems.
Remove it before publishing a photo when the location of a home, school, workplace, child, or private event should not be exposed. After stripping metadata, verify the exported copy rather than assuming every editor removed every metadata block or embedded thumbnail.
