View and remove EXIF data from photos

What is EXIF data?

EXIF is information that cameras and phones save inside a photo. It includes the date and time, the camera or phone model, lens and exposure settings, and often the GPS coordinates where the photo was taken. Editing apps can add their own XMP and IPTC data too.

How to remove EXIF data from a photo

Drop the photo above. exifr reads every metadata block and shows it in a table, with a warning at the top if the photo contains a GPS location. Press Download without metadata to save a clean copy. The photo is drawn onto a canvas and saved again, so only the pixels are copied and every metadata block is left behind. JPGs are saved at quality 95 and PNGs stay lossless.

Why remove EXIF data?

A photo you post can reveal where you live, work or go to school through its GPS tags, and the timestamps show when you were there. Many large social networks strip this data on upload, but email, chat apps that send files as documents, forums and cloud links often pass the original file on untouched.

HEIC and TIFF photos

Viewing metadata works for JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF and HEIC. Saving a clean copy needs the browser to draw the image, and only Safari can draw HEIC and TIFF. In Safari those are saved as clean JPGs. In other browsers, convert HEIC to JPG first. That conversion leaves the metadata out anyway.

Before you start

Input: JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, TIFF, and HEIC. Output: Clean image. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.

Pick the size and quality for where the image will end up. Resizing before strong compression usually keeps more visible detail. Keep an untouched original so you can export again later.
