What does compressing do?
Compression re-encodes an image at a lower quality target, discarding detail your eye is unlikely to notice. The result is a much smaller file that still looks the same at normal viewing sizes.
Why compress images?
Smaller images load faster on the web, fit inside email limits, and take up less space in cloud storage. A good compressor can often cut file size by half or more with no visible difference.
Quality & compatibility notes
Start around 80% and preview the result. Photos tolerate more compression than screenshots or line art. You can keep the original format or standardise everything to JPG.
