MP4 and MOV

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container. MP4 was built on the QuickTime file format, so the two are close relatives and hold the same codecs, such as H.264, HEVC and AAC. Converting between them is usually a rewrap: the video and audio are moved into the new container unchanged.

How to convert MP4 to MOV

No quality loss

Because the streams are copied, the MOV has exactly the same picture and sound as the MP4, and about the same file size. The exception is a codec that Apple's players don't handle in a MOV, such as AV1 or VP9 video or Opus audio. Those files are re-encoded to H.264 video and AAC audio so the MOV plays in QuickTime and editing apps.

Why convert MP4 to MOV?

Some editing apps, motion templates and client or broadcast delivery specs ask for a .mov file. Rewrapping meets that request without the size and time of a full export. If a spec asks for a particular codec, such as ProRes, you need an editor's export instead, because this tool keeps the codec the MP4 already has.
