How to convert ASS to SRT

Drop your .ass or .ssa file above and press Convert. The tool reads each Dialogue line, removes the override tags and styling, and writes numbered SRT cues. ASS stores times in hundredths of a second, like 0:01:02.50. They become SRT's millisecond format, 00:01:02,500. Comment lines are skipped, and the \N marker becomes a real line break.

Why convert ASS to SRT

ASS can do a lot, but many players, editors and streaming platforms only accept .srt. Converting your subtitles to SRT means they'll load almost anywhere.

What styling is lost

SRT stores only timing and text, so everything that shapes how an ASS script looks is removed. Every override block in curly braces goes, along with the style definitions in the [V4+ Styles] section:

• Position and movement: \pos, \move, \an alignment and per-line margins. Every cue shows at the player's default spot, usually bottom center.
• Fonts and colors: the font name, size, colors, borders and shadows from each style, plus inline \fn, \fs, \c and \alpha overrides. The player's own subtitle font is used instead.
• Bold, italic and underline set with {\b1}, {\i1} or {\u1} are removed. They are not turned into SRT <b>, <i> or <u> tags.
• Karaoke: \k, \kf and \ko syllable timings are dropped, so the whole line shows for the full cue.
• Effects and animation: fades with \fad, transforms with \t, rotation, blur and the Effect field, such as scrolling banners.

Signs, songs and typesetting lines

Every Dialogue line becomes a cue, whatever its style. Sign translations, song lyrics and other typesetting show up as normal captions at the bottom, sometimes on top of the dialogue. Lines drawn in vector drawing mode, {\p1}, come through as strings of coordinates. Cues are also written in file order, which isn't always time order in scripts edited in Aegisub. To clean this up first:

• Open the script in Aegisub and sort all lines by start time.
• Comment out sign, karaoke and drawing lines you don't want. The converter skips commented lines.
• Save the script, then convert it here.

Before you start

Input: ASS and SSA. Output: SubRip. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.

A document conversion may not keep every font, layout rule, embedded object, subtitle cue or app-specific feature. Read through the full result before you send or submit it.
