What sample rate means

The sample rate is how many times per second the audio waveform is measured. 44,100 Hz, or 44.1 kHz, is the CD standard. 48 kHz is the standard for video. Lower rates such as 16 kHz and 8 kHz capture only the range needed for speech and are used by phone systems and speech recognition.

How to change the sample rate

Drop an audio file above, choose a rate from the list and press Change sample rate. The audio is resampled to that rate in your browser and saved as an MP3 at about 190 kbps. The list holds the standard rates: 8,000, 11,025, 16,000, 22,050, 32,000, 44,100 and 48,000 Hz.

Which rate to choose

Use 48 kHz for audio that goes into a video project, so it matches the video timeline. Use 44.1 kHz for music. Use 16 kHz for speech recognition engines and voice assistants, and 8 kHz for telephone systems and IVR prompts. Going down removes the highest frequencies for good. Going up doesn't add detail, it only makes the file match a system that expects that rate.
