How to rotate a video

The picture is rotated in the pixels themselves, not with a rotation flag, so it plays the right way up in every player, editor and website.

Why videos end up sideways

Phones store a rotation tag with each video instead of turning the pixels. Some players, older editors and upload forms ignore that tag and show the clip on its side or upside down. A front camera can also produce a mirrored picture, which a horizontal flip fixes.

Encoding

The rotated video is encoded as H.264 with AAC audio in an MP4 and any old rotation tag is cleared. When the browser supports it, MediaBunny does the work with WebCodecs, otherwise FFmpeg runs in WebAssembly. Long clips take a while, so start with a short test.

Processed on your device

Rotate a video by 90° or 180°, or flip it horizontally or vertically, and save the corrected MP4 that plays upright everywhere. A media engine inside your browser does the work, so the video never leaves your device.

Before you start

Video work uses a lot of memory and CPU. Try a short clip first and check that the sound and playback work. On a phone, split large batches into smaller ones.
