Why convert WebP to GIF?

Animated WebP is smaller than GIF, and every current browser plays it. Many other places still only animate GIF: email newsletters, older forums, chat apps, slide decks and some upload forms. Converting gives you a file that moves everywhere, at the cost of a larger size.

How to convert WebP to GIF

Drop one or more .webp files above and press Convert all. Your browser decodes each frame of the WebP with its display time. FFmpeg, running as WebAssembly in the tab, then builds one 256-color palette from all frames and writes the GIF with the same timing and loop count. The first conversion downloads the engine. Download the GIFs one by one or as a ZIP.

Animation and browser support

Reading the frames of an animated WebP needs the WebCodecs ImageDecoder API, which Chrome, Edge and other Chromium-based browsers have. In a browser without it, still WebP images convert as usual, and animated ones show a message instead of turning into a one-frame GIF.

Colors, transparency and timing

A GIF can show at most 256 colors, so photos and smooth gradients are dithered to fit, and the colors may look slightly grainy. GIF has a single transparent color rather than smooth alpha, so semi-transparent edges become either fully see-through or solid. Frame times are stored in hundredths of a second, and frames shorter than 20 ms are lengthened to 20 ms, because many viewers slow faster frames down.

Before you start

Input: WEBP. Output: GIF. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.

Video work uses a lot of memory and CPU. Try a short clip first and check that the sound and playback work. On a phone, split large batches into smaller ones.

Keep the original until you have opened and checked the result. The work happens in this browser tab, so the size you can handle depends on your device's memory, your browser and the file itself.
