What is ARW?

ARW stands for Alpha RAW. It is the RAW format of Sony's interchangeable-lens cameras and its RAW-capable compacts. Like most RAW formats, it is based on the TIFF structure. It keeps the raw sensor data, the shot's EXIF metadata and a JPEG preview made by the camera. Most photo viewers, web forms and messaging apps won't accept .ARW files. That is why people convert ARW to JPG before sharing.

Which Sony cameras shoot ARW?

Sony Alpha cameras save RAW photos as ARW. That covers full-frame a7, a7R, a7S and a7C models, the a9 and a1, APS-C bodies from the a6000 series to the ZV-E10, and older A-mount cameras such as the a77 and a99. RAW-capable compacts like the RX100 and RX10 lines and the ZV-1 write ARW too. Sony has revised the format over the years. Every version is still a .arw file with an embedded preview, and that preview is all this converter needs.

Compressed, uncompressed and lossless ARW

Sony cameras offer compressed and uncompressed RAW. Newer bodies such as the a1 and a7 IV add a lossless compressed option. The choice changes how much data the RAW keeps and how much card space it uses. It does not change the embedded preview, so every variant converts to JPG the same way here.

How large will the JPG be?

The JPG has the same pixel size as the preview the camera embedded. Sony bodies differ here, and some store a preview well below the sensor's full resolution. The converter always picks the largest preview in the file. That is plenty for screens, social media and email. Check the image size before a large print. If it is too small, open the ARW in a RAW editor and export a full-resolution JPEG.

How the ARW to JPG conversion works

ARW files carry a JPEG preview made by the camera. It is the image you see on the camera screen after you take the shot. This tool finds the largest embedded JPEG, decodes it and saves it again at the quality you choose, from 1 to 100 with 85 as the default. There is no RAW development step, so even a large batch converts fast. Your original ARW files are not changed.

What the JPG will look like

The preview uses the settings from when the photo was taken, such as white balance and Creative Style or Creative Look. So the JPG looks like an in-camera JPEG, not a flat RAW rendering. Its pixel size matches the embedded preview. EXIF metadata such as capture date, exposure settings and GPS location is not copied. For exposure, colour or white balance edits, develop the RAW in Sony's Imaging Edge Desktop, Lightroom or Capture One.

How to convert ARW to JPEG on Windows and Mac

Before you start

Input: ARW. Output: JPG. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.

Local AI tools may download a model before the first run and can use a lot of memory. The output can contain mistakes or gaps, so review it before you rely on it.

Keep the original until you have opened and checked the result. The work happens in this browser tab, so the size you can handle depends on your device's memory, your browser and the file itself.

How to convert ARW to JPG
