What is NEF?

NEF stands for Nikon Electronic Format. It is the RAW format of Nikon DSLRs and Z series mirrorless cameras. It is based on the TIFF structure. Each file stores the raw sensor data, the shot's EXIF metadata and a JPEG preview made by the camera.

Which Nikon cameras shoot NEF?

Nikon DSLRs save RAW photos as NEF, from entry-level bodies like the D3500 and D5600 to the D7500, D750, D780, D850 and D6. The Z mirrorless line uses it too, including the Z5, the Z6 and Z7 series, Z50, Z fc, Z f, Z8 and Z9.

NEF compression and High Efficiency RAW

Depending on the body, Nikon offers lossless compressed, compressed and uncompressed NEF. Some cameras can also record RAW files at a smaller resolution. Recent models such as the Z8 and Z9 add High Efficiency RAW (HE and HE*), which makes files smaller still. These settings change how the sensor data is stored. Each file still carries the camera's JPEG preview, so they all convert here the same way.

How the NEF to JPG conversion works

NEF files carry a JPEG preview made by the camera. It is the image you see on the camera screen after you take the shot. This tool finds the largest embedded JPEG, decodes it and saves it again at the quality you choose, from 1 to 100 with 85 as the default. There is no RAW development step, so even a large batch converts fast. Your original NEF files are not changed.

What the JPG will look like

The preview uses the settings from when the photo was taken, such as white balance and Picture Control. So the JPG looks like an in-camera JPEG, not a flat RAW rendering. Its pixel size matches the embedded preview. EXIF metadata such as capture date, exposure settings and GPS location is not copied. For exposure, colour or white balance edits, develop the RAW in Nikon's NX Studio or Lightroom.

How to convert NEF to JPG on Windows and Mac

• Mac: open the NEF in Preview, choose File > Export, set Format to JPEG and save.
• Windows: install Microsoft's free Raw Image Extension from the Microsoft Store. Then Photos and File Explorer can show NEF files.
• Nikon NX Studio, free: select the images, choose File > Convert Files and pick JPEG as the format.
• Lightroom Classic: select the photos, choose File > Export and set Image Format to JPEG.
