What is CR3?

CR3 is the RAW format Canon introduced in 2018 with the EOS M50, replacing CR2. CR2 used the TIFF structure. CR3 is built on the ISO base media file format, the same container family as MP4 and HEIF. It holds the sensor data, EXIF metadata and embedded JPEG previews.

Which Canon cameras shoot CR3?

Every EOS R mirrorless camera records CR3, from the original EOS R and RP to the R5, R6, R7, R8, R10, R50 and R100. Later EOS M models such as the M50 and M6 Mark II do too. Canon's last DSLRs also switched: the 90D, 250D (Rebel SL3), 850D (Rebel T8i) and 1D X Mark III all write CR3. So do PowerShot compacts like the G7 X Mark III and G5 X Mark II.

C-RAW and software support

Most CR3 cameras offer C-RAW, a compressed RAW option that makes much smaller files than standard RAW. CR3 is newer than CR2, so older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom and system photo viewers can't open it. This tool avoids that problem. It reads the JPEG preview Canon stores in the file and does not need to decode the RAW data.

How the CR3 to JPG conversion works

CR3 files carry a JPEG preview made by the camera. It is the image you see on the camera screen after you take the shot. This tool finds the largest embedded JPEG, decodes it and saves it again at the quality you choose, from 1 to 100 with 85 as the default. There is no RAW development step, so even a large batch converts fast. Your original CR3 files are not changed.

What the JPG will look like

The preview uses the settings from when the photo was taken, such as white balance and Picture Style. So the JPG looks like an in-camera JPEG, not a flat RAW rendering. Its pixel size matches the embedded preview. EXIF metadata such as capture date, exposure settings and GPS location is not copied. For exposure, colour or white balance edits, develop the RAW in Canon's Digital Photo Professional or Lightroom.

How to convert CR3 to JPG on a computer

Besides this page, these are the usual ways to turn CR3 files into JPEGs:

  • In any browser: drop the CR3 files above, press Convert all, then download the JPGs or a ZIP of all of them.
  • Mac: on a recent macOS version, open the CR3 in Preview, choose File > Export, set Format to JPEG and save.
  • Canon Digital Photo Professional 4, free for EOS owners: select the images, then use File > Batch process to save them as JPEG.
  • Lightroom Classic, current version: select the photos, choose File > Export and set Image Format to JPEG.

Before you start

Input: CR3. Output: JPG. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.

Local AI tools may download a model before the first run and can use a lot of memory. The output can contain mistakes or gaps, so review it before you rely on it.

Keep the original until you have opened and checked the result. The work happens in this browser tab, so the size you can handle depends on your device's memory, your browser and the file itself.
