What is DNG?

DNG stands for Digital Negative. It is an openly documented RAW format that Adobe published in 2004. It is based on TIFF. Because the specification is public, any software can support it, unlike closed formats such as CR2, NEF or ARW. A DNG file holds the sensor data, metadata and usually one or more preview images.

Where DNG files come from

Some camera makers use DNG as their main RAW format, including Leica for its M, Q and SL cameras and Ricoh Pentax for the GR III and, as an option, Pentax K series DSLRs. DJI drones save RAW photos as DNG. Phones do too: Apple ProRAW on iPhone Pro models, RAW capture on Google Pixel, and Samsung's Expert RAW app. Adobe's free DNG Converter and Lightroom can also turn other RAW formats into DNG.

Previews inside a DNG

The DNG specification lets a file carry preview images but doesn't require a full-size one. Camera DNGs usually include a JPEG preview. Files made with Adobe DNG Converter may hold a medium preview, a full-size one or none, depending on its settings. This tool uses the largest JPEG preview it finds. If there is none, it reads an uncompressed preview image from the TIFF structure. Phone RAW files such as Apple ProRAW are computational, meaning the phone merges several frames before saving. If they include a preview, it shows the phone's processed look.

How the DNG to JPG conversion works

DNG files carry a JPEG preview made by the camera. It is the image you see on the camera screen after you take the shot. This tool finds the largest embedded JPEG, decodes it and saves it again at the quality you choose, from 1 to 100 with 85 as the default. There is no RAW development step, so even a large batch converts fast. Your original DNG files are not changed.

What the JPG will look like

The preview uses the settings from when the photo was taken, such as white balance and the camera's or phone's colour rendering. So the JPG looks like an in-camera JPEG, not a flat RAW rendering. Its pixel size matches the embedded preview. EXIF metadata such as capture date, exposure settings and GPS location is not copied. For exposure, colour or white balance edits, develop the RAW in Lightroom or another DNG-compatible editor.

How to convert DNG to JPG on Mac and Windows

Other common ways to turn a DNG file into a JPEG:

• In any browser: drop the DNG files above, press Convert all, then download the JPGs or a ZIP.
• Mac: open the DNG in Preview, choose File > Export, set Format to JPEG and save.
• Windows: install Microsoft's free Raw Image Extension from the Microsoft Store. Then Photos and File Explorer can show DNG files.
• Lightroom, desktop or mobile: open the DNG and export it as JPEG.

Before you start

Input: DNG. Output: JPG. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.
