What is an M4R file?

M4R is Apple's ringtone format. It is AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container with a .m4r extension. iPhones only accept ringtones in this format, up to 40 seconds long.

How to add the ringtone to your iPhone

Connect your iPhone to a computer. Open Finder on a Mac or iTunes on Windows, and drag the .m4r file onto your iPhone. The ringtone then shows up in the Sounds settings on your iPhone.

• Connect the iPhone with a cable and enter its passcode if asked.
• On a Mac, select the iPhone in the Finder sidebar. On Windows, open iTunes and click the phone icon.
• Drag the .m4r file onto the iPhone's window. It is copied to the Tones list.
• On the iPhone, open Settings, then Sounds and Haptics, then Ringtone, and pick it.
