What this MP4 to MP3 converter does

It reads the audio track from an MP4, M4V or MOV video, drops the picture and saves the sound as an MP3 file. If a video has more than one audio track, such as a second language or a commentary track, the first one is used.

How to convert MP4 to MP3

Why extract audio from MP4?

Sometimes you only want the sound: a song from a music video you made, a recorded lecture or sermon to listen to on a walk, an interview to send for transcription, or a voice-over to reuse in another edit. An MP3 is a small fraction of the size of the video and plays on any audio device.

Audio quality and bitrate

The audio track is decoded and encoded to MP3. On Auto, the bitrate follows the source track, so a 128 kbps AAC soundtrack becomes a 128 kbps MP3. In the options panel you can set a fixed bitrate from 64 to 320 kbps, choose a sample rate and keep or drop metadata. If you need the original audio with no re-encoding at all, use Extract Original Video Audio, which copies the track into an M4A or similar file.

Videos without sound

If a video has no audio track, the converter tells you so instead of saving a silent file.

Converting audio can change the codec, bitrate, channels, tags and length. Listen to the start and end of the result. Keep a lossless original if you may edit it again.
