Why extract WAV instead of MP3?

WAV holds uncompressed PCM samples, so audio editors, DAWs, samplers and transcription tools can read it without decoding. Choose WAV when the sound is going into Audacity, Premiere, Logic, a speech-to-text service or a sampler. Choose MP3 when you just want to listen to it or share a small file.

How to convert MP4 to WAV

Drop one or more MP4, MOV or M4V videos above and press Convert all. The first audio track is decoded in your browser and written as a 16-bit PCM WAV at the video's own sample rate, which is usually 48,000 Hz for camera and phone footage. In the options panel you can set 44,100 Hz instead if the file is headed for a music project or a CD. Download each WAV or a ZIP of all of them.

File size

Uncompressed audio is large. One minute of 16-bit stereo WAV is about 10.6 MB at 44,100 Hz and about 11.5 MB at 48,000 Hz, so the WAV from a 30-minute video is roughly 345 MB. That is normal and doesn't mean anything went wrong. If you only need to listen to the audio, MP4 to MP3 makes a file about a tenth of the size.

Quality

The soundtrack in an MP4 is almost always AAC, a lossy codec. Writing it to WAV stops any further loss while you edit, but it can't restore detail AAC already removed. The WAV sounds exactly like the video, no better and no worse.

Converting audio can change the codec, bitrate, channels, tags and length. Listen to the start and end of the result. Keep a lossless original if you may edit it again.
