What is a WAV file?

WAV is an uncompressed audio format from Microsoft and IBM. It stores audio as raw PCM samples, so editors and samplers can read it without decoding. It is the usual format for audio editing, sampling and CD mastering.

Why convert MP3 to WAV?

Some audio editors, samplers, DAWs and hardware players only accept uncompressed PCM. A WAV copy works with all of them. It can't bring back detail that MP3 compression already removed, but it stops further loss while you edit.

How to convert MP3 to WAV

Drop one or more MP3 files above and press Convert all. Each MP3 is decoded in your browser and written as 16-bit PCM WAV. Leave Sample rate on Auto to keep the MP3's own rate, usually 44,100 Hz, or pick 48,000 Hz if the WAV is going into a video project. Download the WAVs one by one or as a ZIP.

WAV quality and file size

The output is 16-bit PCM WAV at the source sample rate, the same bit depth as an audio CD. Expect the WAV to be about 4 to 11 times larger than the MP3, depending on the MP3 bitrate. One minute of CD-quality stereo WAV takes about 10.6 MB, so a 4-minute song becomes roughly 42 MB.

Converting audio can change the codec, bitrate, channels, tags and length. Listen to the start and end of the result. Keep a lossless original if you may edit it again.
