What is ORF?

ORF stands for Olympus RAW Format. It is used by Olympus cameras and by the OM System cameras that took over the line, such as the OM-1 and OM-5. ORF is built on the TIFF structure. Each file holds the Micro Four Thirds sensor data, the EXIF metadata and a JPEG preview that the camera renders with your Picture Mode.

Which cameras shoot ORF?

Olympus OM-D bodies such as the E-M1, E-M1 Mark II and III, E-M1X, E-M5 series and E-M10 series, the PEN models like the E-P7 and PEN-F, the Tough TG compacts with RAW, and OM System cameras including the OM-1, OM-1 Mark II, OM-3 and OM-5 all record .ORF files.

Preview size on Olympus and OM System cameras

The embedded preview is smaller than the sensor. On the E-M1 Mark II and E-M10 files we tested, it was 3200 × 2400 pixels, while the sensors record 20 and 16 megapixels. That is plenty for screens, social media and small prints. High Res Shot files also carry a preview of that size, not the 50 or 80 megapixel result.

How the ORF to JPG conversion works

ORF files carry a JPEG preview made by the camera. It is the image you see on the camera screen after you take the shot. This tool finds the largest embedded JPEG, decodes it and saves it again at the quality you choose, from 1 to 100 with 85 as the default. There is no RAW development step, so even a large batch converts fast. Your original ORF files are not changed.

What the JPG will look like

The preview uses the settings from when the photo was taken, such as white balance and Picture Mode. So the JPG looks like an in-camera JPEG, not a flat RAW rendering. Its pixel size matches the embedded preview. EXIF metadata such as capture date, exposure settings and GPS location is not copied. For exposure, colour or white balance edits, develop the RAW in OM Workspace, Lightroom or Capture One.

Before you start

Input: ORF. Output: JPG. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.

Local AI tools may download a model before the first run and can use a lot of memory. The output can contain mistakes or gaps, so review it before you rely on it.

Keep the original until you have opened and checked the result. The work happens in this browser tab, so the size you can handle depends on your device's memory, your browser and the file itself.
