What is an ICO file?

ICO is a container that holds several icon sizes in one file. Browsers use it for the favicon in tabs and bookmarks, and Windows uses it for shortcuts, desktop icons and program files. The system picks whichever size fits the place it is drawing.

How to convert PNG to ICO

Drop a PNG, JPG or WebP above and press Convert all. The image is drawn at 16, 32, 48 and 64 pixels, each size is saved as a PNG, and the four are packed into one .ico file. Non-square images are centered inside the square with transparent padding instead of being stretched. Download the file and rename it favicon.ico if it is for a website.

Favicon sizes and what they are for

16 px is the classic tab icon. 32 px is used by high-density screens and the Windows taskbar. 48 px appears on Windows desktop shortcuts. 64 px gives Windows a larger size to scale from. Start from a square image of at least 256 pixels with a simple, bold shape, since fine detail disappears at 16 px.

Need the full favicon set?

Current browsers and phones look for more than an .ico file. Apple devices use a 180 px apple-touch-icon, and Android and installable web apps read 192 and 512 px PNGs from a web manifest. The favicon generator makes all of those plus the HTML tags in one ZIP.

Before you start

Input: PNG, JPG, JPEG, and WEBP. Output: ICO. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.

Pick the size and quality for where the image will end up. Resizing before strong compression usually keeps more visible detail. Keep an untouched original so you can export again later.

Keep the original until you have opened and checked the result. The work happens in this browser tab, so the size you can handle depends on your device's memory, your browser and the file itself.

Steps to convert PNG to ICO

  1. Drop a square PNG, JPG or WebP into the box above.
  2. Press Convert all. The .ico file is built in your browser.
  3. Download the .ico and rename it to favicon.ico if needed.
  4. Put it in your site root, or link to it from your HTML head.
