What is RW2?

RW2 is the RAW format of Panasonic Lumix cameras. It is a TIFF-like file that stores the sensor data, the EXIF metadata and a JPEG preview the camera renders with your Photo Style. Panasonic's free RAW software, SILKYPIX Developer Studio SE, comes with many Lumix cameras.

Which Panasonic cameras shoot RW2?

Lumix G mirrorless cameras such as the G9, G9 II, GH5, GH6, GH7, G85 and G100, the full-frame S series including the S1, S5 and S5 II, and RAW-capable compacts like the LX100 II, TZ200 (ZS200) and FZ1000 II all save .RW2 files.

The RW2 preview is small

Panasonic embeds a modest preview. On the G9 and GH4 files we tested it was 1920 pixels on the long side, while the sensors record 16 to 20 megapixels. That suits phones, chat and web pages, but not large prints. This converter extracts the preview and doesn't develop the sensor data, so for a full-resolution JPEG, process the RW2 in a RAW editor or use the camera's in-camera RAW processing.

How the RW2 to JPG conversion works

RW2 files carry a JPEG preview made by the camera. It is the image you see on the camera screen after you take the shot. This tool finds the largest embedded JPEG, decodes it and saves it again at the quality you choose, from 1 to 100 with 85 as the default. There is no RAW development step, so even a large batch converts fast. Your original RW2 files are not changed.

What the JPG will look like

The preview uses the settings from when the photo was taken, such as white balance and Photo Style. So the JPG looks like an in-camera JPEG, not a flat RAW rendering. Its pixel size matches the embedded preview. EXIF metadata such as capture date, exposure settings and GPS location is not copied. For exposure, colour or white balance edits, develop the RAW in SILKYPIX Developer Studio, Lightroom or Capture One.

How to convert RW2 to JPG at full resolution

When you need every pixel, use one of these:

  • In the camera: open the photo in playback, choose RAW Processing from the menu and save a full-size JPEG.
  • SILKYPIX Developer Studio SE, free with many Lumix cameras: open the RW2 and develop it to JPEG.
  • Mac: open the RW2 in Preview, choose File > Export and save as JPEG.
  • Lightroom Classic or Capture One: export the photos as JPEG.
  • For a quick preview-size JPEG in any browser, drop the files above.

Before you start

Input: RW2. Output: JPG. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.

Local AI tools may download a model before the first run and can use a lot of memory. The output can contain mistakes or gaps, so review it before you rely on it.

Keep the original until you have opened and checked the result. The work happens in this browser tab, so the size you can handle depends on your device's memory, your browser and the file itself.
