What is AVIF?

AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. It is built on the AV1 video codec from the Alliance for Open Media. It compresses photos very well and supports transparency, HDR and wide colour. That is why many websites and image CDNs now serve AVIF to browsers that accept it. If you right-click and save one of those images, you get an .avif file that other apps may not open.

Why convert AVIF to JPG?

When a design tool, CMS, office app or older phone can't open an AVIF file, JPG is the reliable fallback. Nearly every camera, editor, website and upload form understands it.

Why won't my AVIF file open?

An AVIF can show fine in a browser and still fail to open elsewhere. The app or operating system has no AV1 image decoder. The usual causes:

Windows Photos needs Microsoft's AV1 Video Extension, a free download from the Microsoft Store, before it can show AVIF images.
Macs before macOS Ventura, and iPhones and iPads before iOS and iPadOS 16, have no built-in AVIF support.
Older image editors, office suites, messaging apps and many upload forms only accept JPG, PNG or GIF.
Browser versions released before AVIF support arrived can't show it at all.

AVIF support in browsers and apps

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera show AVIF, and Safari supports it from Safari 16. Windows 10 and 11 open AVIF once the AV1 Video Extension is installed. macOS Ventura and later open it in Preview and Photos, and recent versions of GIMP can edit it. Older desktop software and online services still lag behind, so JPG is the safer choice for sharing.

How to convert AVIF to JPG here

Your browser's own AVIF decoder reads the image. The tool draws it onto a canvas and saves it as a JPG at the quality you pick, 85 by default. So it works in any browser that can show AVIF. If the image shows in a tab, it will convert. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white. HDR and 10- or 12-bit AVIFs are converted to standard 8-bit colour. An animated AVIF exports a single still frame.

A format change can affect compression, transparency, color and metadata. Zoom in on fine detail and transparent areas in the result. Work on a copy if the photo is one you want to keep.
