What is AVIF?

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 codec. It makes small files and supports transparency and wide colour. Not every editor or platform can open it yet.

Why convert AVIF to PNG?

PNG is lossless and works everywhere. Pick it when you need to edit an AVIF image, keep its transparency, or open it in software that can't read AVIF.

Quality and file size

The PNG keeps the decoded AVIF pixels exactly, including the alpha channel. It is usually bigger than the AVIF. That is normal for lossless output.

AVIF to PNG or AVIF to JPG?

Choose PNG if the image has transparency, has sharp edges like logos, screenshots, text or illustrations, or will be edited and saved again. PNG never adds compression artifacts, however often you save it. Choose JPG for ordinary photos you just want to share, where a much smaller file matters more than exact pixels.

Colour depth, HDR and animation

Your browser decodes the AVIF, and the pixels are written to a standard 8-bit-per-channel PNG. HDR and 10- or 12-bit AVIFs are reduced to standard 8-bit colour, so bright highlights can look different from the original on an HDR screen. Animated AVIFs export a single still frame.

How to convert AVIF to PNG on a Mac with Preview

On macOS Ventura or later, the built-in Preview app can open AVIF and export a PNG, one file at a time. For batches or other systems, use the converter above.

• Open the AVIF in Preview.
• Choose File > Export.
• Set Format to PNG and click Save.

Before you start

Input: AVIF. Output: PNG. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.

A format change can affect compression, transparency, color and metadata. Zoom in on fine detail and transparent areas in the result. Work on a copy if the photo is one you want to keep.
