Why convert PNG to AVIF?

An AVIF is often a fraction of the size of a PNG at a similar visual quality, and it still supports transparency. That makes it a good fit for fast websites, where large PNG screenshots and hero images slow down the first load. Lighthouse and other page speed tools suggest AVIF or WebP for this reason.

How to convert PNG to AVIF

Browsers can show AVIF but none of them can save it, so the first conversion downloads libavif, the open source AVIF encoder, as a WebAssembly file of about 3.5 MB. After that, every PNG is encoded on your device. Large images take a few seconds each, because AVIF is slower to encode than JPG or WebP.

Quality and compatibility

Transparency is kept. The encoding is lossy, so very fine detail and sharp text edges can soften a little. Check the result at full size before you replace a PNG. Every current major browser can display AVIF, but some apps, CMS media libraries and social sites still reject it. Many sites serve AVIF with a WebP or PNG fallback for that reason.
