What is HEIC?

HEIC is the default photo format on iPhone and iPad. It uses HEVC compression to keep files small, roughly half the size of a JPG of the same shot. Many apps outside Apple's, including older editors and design tools on Windows, still can't open it.

Why convert HEIC to PNG?

PNG is lossless and opens everywhere. Pick it when you plan to edit a photo several times, place it in a design tool, or keep every pixel exactly as it was decoded. Each save of a PNG gives back the same pixels, while every JPG save adds a little more compression.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

Drop the .heic or .heif files above and press Convert all. libheif, compiled to WebAssembly, decodes each photo in your browser, and the pixels are written straight into a PNG. There is no quality setting, because PNG compression never changes pixels. The first image in each file is converted, which is the photo itself for normal iPhone shots.

Quality and file size

The PNG keeps the decoded HEIC pixels exactly, with no extra compression loss. Expect a much bigger file than the HEIC original, often five to ten times larger for a 12 megapixel photo. That is the cost of lossless storage. If you only need to share or upload the photo, HEIC to JPG gives a smaller file.

Before you start

Input: HEIC and HEIF. Output: PNG. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.

A format change can affect compression, transparency, color and metadata. Zoom in on fine detail and transparent areas in the result. Work on a copy if the photo is one you want to keep.
