Convert JFIF to JPG

Convert JFIF to JPG online without losing quality. A JFIF file is already a JPEG, so the image is kept exactly and saved as .jpg. Nothing is uploaded.

What is a JFIF file?

JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is the standard way of storing a JPEG image in a file, and most .jpg files you have ever opened are JFIF inside. A .jfif file is simply a JPEG with a less common extension. The picture, the compression and the colors are the same as in any JPG.

Why images save as .jfif

The usual cause is Windows. When you save a picture from a website in Chrome or Edge, the browser asks Windows which extension belongs to the image/jpeg type. On some PCs that setting points to .jfif instead of .jpg, so every downloaded photo gets the odd extension. Upload forms, older photo apps and some phone galleries then refuse the file even though it is a normal JPEG.

How this converter works

Drop your .jfif files above and press Convert all. The page checks that each file really starts with a JPEG header. If it does, the bytes are kept exactly as they are and the file is saved with a .jpg name, so there is no re-compression and no quality loss, and even a large batch finishes in moments. If a file turns out to be another format with a .jfif name, it is decoded and saved as a real JPG instead. Download the files one by one or as a ZIP.

Rename instead of converting

Because a JFIF file is a JPEG, renaming it gives the same result for a single image:

  • Windows: in File Explorer turn on View > Show > File name extensions, then rename photo.jfif to photo.jpg and confirm the warning.
  • Mac: select the file in Finder, press Return, change .jfif to .jpg and choose Use .jpg.
  • Many files, or a phone or tablet: drop them on this page and download a ZIP of JPGs.

Before you start

Input: JFIF, JFI, JPE, PJP, and PJPEG. Output: JPG. The settings appear before anything runs, so you can check them first. Your original file is never changed.

A format change can affect compression, transparency, color and metadata. Zoom in on fine detail and transparent areas in the result. Work on a copy if the photo is one you want to keep.

Keep the original until you have opened and checked the result. The work happens in this browser tab, so the size you can handle depends on your device's memory, your browser and the file itself.
